Stand For Myself
I love trading music with my son. We swear by genres from different worlds, though we converge on the quest for purposeful music. Once in a while we stumble upon songs where the lyrics resonate between us. These are magical moments. A few weeks ago, I asked him to share new songs with lyrics that carried meaning. He shared this one. Yola described it as her "antechamber to freedom". I think I understand what she meant.
Here is my ear worm from this song:
Now I'm alive,
It's hard to explain
It took this much time,
And took this much pain
You can get here
If you're willing
Let go of yourself
For a new beginning
It was easier to sing,
Than stand for myself
It was easy to give in,
Than stand for myself
It made me think how hard it is to retain agency.
